Arnaquatsaaq

(1908 - 1988)
of Repulse Bay and Coral Harbour.
Daughter of Oleepeka (Rebecca) and George Cleveland.
Adopted by Luke and Rhoda Kidlapik.
Wife of Mathewsie.

Also known as: Arnaquasaq, Mary Arnaquasaq, Angaquasaaq, Angaquasaq, Angaquaqsaaq, Anaquatsaq 

Arnaquasaq was born in 1908 in the Repulse Bay / Coral Harbour area, the daughter of Oleepeka (Rebecca) and adopted by her older sister Rhoda and and her husband, Luke Kidlapik.

Her adoptive father, Luke Kidlapik, was a well-travelled Inuk missionary from Blacklead Island. He is known for founding the Anglican mission at Coral Harbour about 1926 and for widely promoting the use of the written Inuktitut language syllabic system.

Arnaquasaq married a widower named Mathewsie, and moved first to a winter camp south of Kimmirut (Lake Harbour), before finally moving to Iqaluit (Frobisher Bay) in 1958.

They had ten children together.

Arnaquasaq died on April 7, 1988.
