Based on a photo of Anulik as a small child in When the Whalers Were Up North, we can guess she was born about 1920, although katilvik.com lists carverMary Annulik Kutsiq of Igloolik, disc # E5571, with a birthyear of 1916, and by her own estimate, she was born about 1924 in Repulse Bay.
Mary Anulik Kutsiq lived in Igloolik most of her life, and her husband was from Igloolik. They had five children. She was living in 1995.
She was interviewed by Deborah Evaluarjuk in the Fall 1995 edition of Inuk Magazine (online at http://www.itk.ca/inuk-mag/magazines/InukMagazine79.pdf )
It reads in part:
“I'm not sure what year I was born. When Noah Nasook, the Anglican Minister in Igloolik, baptized me, he recorded his own year of birth because I was close to his age. My daughter Elisapee thinks I am now 71 years old. My parents, who worked for the Hudson's Bay Company, were originally from Repulse Bay and I grew up there. In earlier times, Inuit were very close. They had strong friendships and helped each other through hard times. Today, some people have so much while others have so little and do not bother to share at all. In the earlier days, people shared food even if they didn't have much, as long as there was a little bit of extra food. Pieces of meat were cut up evenly and distributed among the whole community. Bread, bannock and tea were also evenly shared. If there was not enough tea to be divided up for each household, every bit of it was brewed together in a big pot so that everyone could have a cup. Tobacco was also shared - if people ran out, they would gather the little bits of leftover tobacco and everyone would sit around sharing one pipe. …”
